It treats the city of Madras under East India Company rule in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as a key site where outcaste Tamils understood and represented themselves as entitled subjects who claimed the support and protection of the Madras government. I analyze documents from the colonial archive produced in the course of everyday rule that include petitions, memorials, commissions of enquiry and police interrogations to explore the ways in which urban outcastes arrogated their identities --- as Roman Catholic Christians and as contractual laborers --- to claim a privileged relationship with an increasingly racially and socially exclusivist state.

By doing so, this work tries to rethink the conceptual and temporal genealogy of the emergence of political subjectivity amongst outcaste communities in the Tamil region.
